Wansford’s proud connection with the 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade

Wansford has a proud connection with the 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade in that some members of the Brigade were billeted in Sulehay Woods and remnants of their camp are visible even today. If you access Sulehay Woods from the Yarwell Road and walk along the main pathway through the woods, about half way down that path you will see to your right the site where some members of the Parachute Brigade were billeted prior to their involvement in WW2’s ‘Operation Market Garden’ in Arnhem, Germany. Now Wansfordians have an excellent opportunity to know more about the Brigade by visiting Stamford Town Hall this month and also by participating in one of the Mayor’s Tours, full details of which may be found in the above poster and also through accessing the following link:
